Bomba: Rhythm, Resistance, and Liberation

A 2-hour introductory workshop in bomba percussion, dance, and history

Bomba is more than music and dance—it is a living practice of resistance and memory, created by enslaved Africans and their descendants in Puerto Rico. In this two-hour introduction, participants will learn foundational bomba rhythms, the call-and-response language between dancer and drummer, and the basics of baile de bomba—where movement leads and the drum responds.

Alongside the hands-on practice, we’ll ground the experience in history: how bomba gatherings offered space for community, cultural preservation, and freedom-making, especially in the years leading up to the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico (1873). We’ll also connect that legacy to the abolitionist struggle associated with Segundo Ruiz Belvis and Ramón Emeterio Betances—names that anchor SRBCC’s mission and the cultural work we carry forward in Chicago.

Come for the rhythm. Leave with deeper connection—to your body, to community, and to an art form rooted in dignity, defiance, and joy.

No experience necessary. All bodies welcome.
