Monica Verona, Artistic Director

Now in our 19 th year, the Piano Project at Bloomingdale celebrates the 125th Anniversary of Aaron Copland. Known as the “Dean of American Music,” he absorbed a wide range of influence from composers in Europe, Africa, and Mexico through his extensive travels early in his career and which lead to his unique style so often defined as “Americana.” Since 2008, the Piano Project has been committed to exploring the extraordinarily wide range of the piano repertoire from the 18 th century to the present. From our first event, focusing on the music of Spain, we have performed music that centered on the First Viennese School, the Three B’s, Music of the Americas, Russian Music, the Music of Beethoven and his Influence, Dance music, Romanticism, Chopin, Jazz, and so much more. In addition to Aaron Copland’s signature style of composition, this year’s Piano Project celebrates the world that he experienced, illustrated by the unique personalities of composers such as Ravel, Turina, Shostakovich, Griffes, Chavez, Barber, Kabalevsky, Tansman, Villa Lobos, Martinu, Ginastera, and Prokofiev; and their common thread with Copland is their rich and individual styles.
