About This Event

Pages of Pride: Junk Journal Workshop with Kyra Pope

In this activity, led by mixed media artist Kyra Pope, participants are invited to decorate the cover of their own handmade junk journal using a wide range of recycled and collage materials. These journals serve as a personal space to explore joy, identity, and self-expression!

This activity celebrates Black creativity, hair empowerment, and affirmation, encouraging everyone to experiment with layering, color, words, and texture. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s expression.

No experience is needed! If you can tear paper and place a sticker, you can create something beautiful.

Participants can take home their journal to continue exploring their voice, story, or simply to collect thoughts, memories, or dreams.

What to expect:

  • No experience needed
  • Engaging and communal space
  • Take home a custom journal!

About the Artist:

Kyra Pope, a multidisciplinary artist, fine art student, and hairstylist explores themes of identity, faith, and transformation in her art, using acrylics, oils, and collage. She often creates intimate, story-driven pieces that reflect her lived experiences as a Black Woman; her practice is rooted in personal narrative. Kyra is a firm believer of the need and right of expression, so as a passionate artist, she strives to build community through art, as well as create a space for underrepresented voices. Much of her work is centered around empowerment and the language of adornment; treating the creative process as both an archive and an offering.

“I’m constantly inspired and grounded by the voices, hands, and stories that show up in shared spaces like this.”

This workshop is offered as part of ongoing creative programming for the Lansdowne community in an LEDC-associated space, supporting artists who want to try something new in a relaxed, collaborative environment.

Ages:

Recommended for ages 10+, with anyone age 10 - 16 required to have an accompanying adult present. Our goal for this time is to have an intergenerational conversation where the community can discuss their differing and shared experiences.
