Featuring works by CCPA student composers & the Chicago Premiere of Rachel J. Peters and Royce Vavrek’s Mermaid in the Jar.

Mermaid in the Jar (20 minutes)

Featuring CCPA graduate voice students and the CCPA Contemporary Ensemble, Mermaid in the Jar is an excerpt from the triptych, THE WILD BEAST OF THE BUNGALOW, adapted from and further inspired by the short story by Sheila Heti. The opera takes place entirely within an eleven-year-old girl’s bedroom after she overhears her parents’ volatile conversations. Through her relationship with a gifted mermaid she is forced to confront what it means to care for others and be cared for herself.
