About This Event

Come celebrate Black History Month with Houston's Black voices at this event powered by Sean Bostic-Sealy Law Offices in Houston.

We are excited to be joining poet Sherrika Mitchell and Sean Bostic-Sealy Law Offices to celebrate Black History Month with the return of our Black Poetry Slam and Book Fair!

The Law Office of Sean Bostic-Sealy is a Black-owned, Houston-based personal injury firm dedicated to fighting for people harmed by negligence, misconduct, or unsafe conditions. Known for advocacy and personalized attention, the firm handles everything from auto accidents to wrongful death casesβ€”only getting paid if they win for their clients.

We are the preferred destination of poetry for thousands of individuals living in Houston and beyond each year. Our poetry events have become a bucket list stop for poetry lovers who drive and fly from across the country to attend our shows every single week.

Our shows, poets and poetry videos have received popular acclaim garnering attention and shares from celebrities like Sophie Turner, Lily Allen, Lenny Kravitz, LeAnn Rimes, Chance The Rapper, Willow Smith, Misty Copeland, Thomas J. Hilfiger, Busta Rhymez, Marc Jacobs and more.

Write About Now Poetry has been covered by, featured by or collaborated with some of the largest media networks in the world, including Vibe Magazine, AfroPunk, Huffington Post, Upworthy, Diet Prada, MasterClass, POPSUGAR, Everyday Feminism, We are mitu, Word Porn, BuzzFeed, Remezcla, HiHo, George Takei, A plus, Blavity, For Harriet, Houston Chronicle, Texas Monthly, Whataburger and more.

Join us at this event to kickoff Black History Month and celebrate Black authors and poets from the greater Houston area and beyond. Write About Now is proud to present to you the Black Poetry Slam and Book Fair. We are Houston's only consistent poetry slam showcase. A poetry slam is a fun, energy-filled and competitive poetry event with open signups in which the best poets from Houston perform their work and are judged by random members of the audience. Typically, the host or another organizer selects the judges, who are instructed to give numerical scores (on a zero to 10 scale) based on the poets' content and performance. The high score and the low score are dropped and the rest are added to give the poet their score for that round. The top 6 scoring poets (approximately) will advance to the second round. The scores will be wiped clean from the first to the second round and the poets will go in order of lowest scoring to highest scoring poets from the first round in the second round. The top 3 scores from the second round win cash prizes. 2 Rounds.

Sign ups open to all. First come. First serve.
