About This Event

A coming-of-age tale that explores the ache of first love and ostracization in Korean society at the turn of the 21st century

South Korea | Coming-of-age Drama | 2024 | 103 minutes

In Korean w/ English Subtitles

Director/Screenwriter: Uhm Ha-neul

Starring: Sim Hyun-seo, Hyun Woo-seok

Film Source: CMnix Bridge

In 2001, transfer student Gyeong-hwan is obsessed with Japanese culture, a dangerous hobby when geopolitical tensions are rising between Japan and South Korea. However, when he discovers that his desk mate Jaemin also loves Japanese pop culture, they form a close bond – until Gyeong-hwan’s secret threatens it.

Uhm Ha-neul’s tender coming-of-age film, told from the perspective of a young queer man, reveals a culture of ostracization against social minorities in modern South Korea, even at a time when society appeared to be getting increasingly progressive. This story of adolescent bond and first love’s pain is at once moving and heartrending.
