Das wars. Ende Gelände. Die letzte Schlacht ist gekämpft. Berlin ist tot. Die letzte Nachbarin mit altem Mietvertrag ist tot. Der Kiez, wie man ihn kannte, ist tot. Die Hoffnung auf bezahlbaren Wohnraum ist tot. Aber all das ist noch nicht begraben. Denn schließlich ist nicht einmal mehr auf dem Friedhof da draußen Platz für Neuankömmlinge.

Berlin is over? Denkste! Das ist meine Geschichte und die geht jetzt in die Verlängerung.

Die Kapelle99 wurde 1879 als Verheißungskirche in einer damals noch beschaulichen Nachbarschaft errichtet. Rasend schnell wandelte sich die Gegend zum dicht besiedeltsten Zentrum Friedrichshains, gilt heute als Clubmeile, Touri-Hotspot und Gentrifizierungs-Brennpunkt durch Mediaspree, Amazon und Co.

Der Kampf gegen Mietwucher, Grundstücksspekulation und Obrigkeiten zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Geschichte des Areals. Der Drang nach Selbstverwirklichung wird zur Selbstbehauptung in einem Kiez, in dem die letzten freien Nischen vom Partymüll des letzten Wochenendes verstopft werden.

Hier erreichen wir die ultimative Station auf unserer Theater-Expedition.

That's it. End of the road. The final battle has been fought. The last neighbour with an old contract is dead. The neighbourhood as we knew it is dead. The hope for affordable housing is dead. But all this is not yet buried.

After all, there isn't even room for new arrivals in the cemetery out there anyway …

Berlin is over? No way! This is my story, and it's going into extra time now.

Kapelle99 was built in 1879 as ‘Verheißungskirche’ (church of promise) in what was then a newly developing neighbourhood around Boxhagener Straße. The area rapidly transformed into the most densely populated quarter of Friedrichshain. Today, it is known as a club- and tourist hotspot and for its gentrification by Mediaspree, Amazon and Co.

The fight against exorbitant rents, property speculation and the authorities runs like a common thread through the history of the area. What remains of self-realisation when the city no longer offers the space one needs to exist?

There we are reaching the ultimate stop on our theatre expedition.
