Workshop “Commedia dell’Arte and the Italian Mask”

A practical and playful session exploring two cornerstones of Italian theatre: Commedia dell’Arte and Dario Fo’s theatre. Between masks, exaggerated gestures, comic gags, and grammelot, participants will rediscover the great archetypes of Commedia dell’Arte, the transformative power of masks, and traditional improvisations.

The session focuses on:

• Developing physical awareness and expressivity
• Exploring theatrical archetypes and character transformation
• Building confidence in improvisation and ensemble play
• Understanding the relationship between tradition, satire, and contemporary performance
• Using voice, nonsense language (grammelot), and movement to tell stories

The workshop is highly practical and collaborative, combining guided exercises, playful experimentation, and group improvisations. It is designed to be inclusive and accessible, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and risk-taking in a supportive environment.

Led by Tonino Scalia, French-Italian performer and filmmaker, specialising in physical theatre, mime, and theatre for young generations.
