About This Event

Build wireless MIDI controllers for Postdigital Lutherie & Interactive Exhibitions – connect sensors, sound and movement.

This hands-on workshop introduces the development of wireless MIDI devices for interactive artworks, instruments, and exhibition installations. Using the Enomik Toolkit, participants will build MIDI controllers that read sensor data (touch, movement, light, pressure, etc.) and transmit it wirelessly, enabling sound, visuals, and digital environments to respond in real time.

The toolkit is built on ESP-NOW MIDI, a low-latency wireless MIDI protocol. The protocol can be deployed independently in standalone implementations, and the web application can also be used with custom ESP-based hardware beyond the standard Enomik boards.

  • Wireless MIDI (ESP-NOW MIDI) as a tool for interactive art and experimental instrument making (using the Enomik Toolkit)
  • Designing MIDI controllers that read sensor input and transmit it wirelessly
    (using the Enomik Toolkit)
  • Making physical objects respond to MIDI (motors, relays, servos, LEDs, etc.)
    (using the Enomik Toolkit)
  • Optional advanced wireless setups for interactive systems
(working directly with the ESP-NOW MIDI protocol)

Practical Info

  • Bring your own laptop
  • DIY hardware kits will be provided (and can be purchased afterwards)
  • You’re welcome to bring your own sensors, ESP microcontrollers, or actuators
  • No prior experience required - curiosity is enough
  • The workshop will be held in English

Agenda

  • Intro: wireless MIDI as a tool for interactive art and experimental instrument making
  • Turning sensors into wireless MIDI controllers
  • Making physical objects respond to MIDI (motors, relays, servos, etc.)
  • Optional advanced wireless setups for interactive systems

This workshop is ideal for artists, designers, and researchers interested in building playful, responsive installations and experimental interfaces without getting stuck in technical complexity.

About your Instructor

Thomas is an artist and creative coder whose practice moves between interactive systems, sound, and experimental instrument making. He developed ESP-NOW MIDI and Enomik 3000, a zero-code toolkit for creating custom MIDI devices and networked instruments. His work explores how sensor-driven interfaces and wireless communication can shape performative and spatial experiences.

He designs and builds his instruments under Grantler Instruments and is part of 3e8, a studio for interactive exhibits and productions with creative technologies, located in Vienna and Berlin.
