In 1816, Beethoven composed what is considered to be the first true song cycle (his only one), An die ferne Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved).

20 years later, Schumann wove a theme from Beethoven's cycle into his Fantasie, Op. 17, as a message to his own "distant beloved."

4 years after that, Schumann composed his own song cycle on love and longing, in anticipation of a long-awaited marriage to his "distant beloved," Clara Wieck.

In a Salon-like setting, experience these intimate and intense works as they were first shared - among friends in the early evening, up close and personal.
