About This Event
Learn to sketch like a geologist in this hands-on workshop along the banks of Loch Lomond at Balmaha!
From Rock to Paper: Sketch like a Geologist
Join us for a creative and educational experience where art meets geology. In this hands-on geology tour that explores the geological history of Balmaha, discover how scientific sketching helps geologists understand the landscape, and learn to observe the world with a keen eye and curiosity.
We’ll explore the geology around Balmaha, which includes the old red sandstone group, metasedimentary rock and evidence of glaciation. We will stop at key viewpoints and geological features to sketch, observe, and discuss what we’re seeing in the landscape.
During this experience, participants will combine geology and art to:
- Learn how geologists use drawing as a scientific tool in the field
- Discover the geology of the southern side of the highland boundary fault and why it looks like it does today
- Take part in basic geological field sketching and note-taking techniques
This is a relaxed, informal guided walk, so whether you're a geology beginner or an enthusiast, a skilled artist or haven't picked up a pencil since school, we’ll guide you through sketching techniques and observational practices.
This in-person geology tour is led by Josephine, who holds a BSc in Geological Sciences. A notebook and pencil will be provided so you can record your geological observations!
Who is it for
- Adults (14+ years) with an interest in geology and/or art
- Geology enthusiasts, students, or anyone curious about understanding Scotland from a different point of view
- No previous experience in geology or art is required, just an interest in observing the world around you
