SAT AM - Image Transfers with Gelli Plates workshop with Robin

Whether you are a beginner or seasoned artist, learn to successfully transfer images from magazines and laser prints onto a Gelli plate!

During this workshop we will explore using magazine images as well as laser copies to learn the best practices of transferring from the gel plate to paper. It can be a challenging and tricky process but there are specific steps that will help ensure success.

Note: this process uses regular acrylic paints, NOT Golden Open paints.

In this workshop, you will learn how to lay down a thin even layer of paint and how much time to leave on the image. Once the image remains on the plate, a second layer of paint or mat medium is used to pull up the image onto paper.

Additional textures can be added to the plate in order to create unique and artistic images!

Students will walk away with a collection of unique papers created from the transfer process. These papers may be used as completed art works, or added into collages or mixed media art.

Supply List for Students to Bring:
This is a studio workshop and students will be using their supplies.

• 8x10 or larger Gelli Plate (recommended brands: Gelli Arts or Gell Press)
• Soft rubber printing brayer
• Optional: a baren
• Amsterdam Black paint (this brand has been tested and works best for transfer)
• A variety of acrylic paint colors for backgrounds (regular acrylic paint, not Golden OPEN)
• Titanium White acrylic paint
• Matte Medium
• 9x12 sulphite drawing paper (60 #)
• Vogue OR Bazaar Magazines (the instructor will have some magazines ready to share with students)
• Optional: your own photos printed on a laser printer. It is important that the images have a high black and white contrast and two layers of toner. (sent through the copier twice; the instructor will have some laser images printed and ready for students to use if they do not have their own)
