About This Event

A special workshop curated during the PRINTERHOF book fair on Sunday, March 1st in Wedding, Berlin. Discover Reading with us, as play!

Reading, within the modern context, often feels static. The author relays information to an audience, who passively receives the text. But reading doesn’t have to be like this. Reading can be playful, powerful, full of opportunities to exert control over the narrative. Together, we’ll re-orient ourselves to think of reading as a form of play—a lively, embodied conversation that challenges and disrupts the idea of a linear narrative and an all-knowing, all-powerful author.

First, we’ll examine a number of narrative games, studying the rules and logic of each special activity. We’ll then look at old archive images for inspiration, paying attention to how these interactive stories evolved through time. After, it’s your turn! You’ll have the opportunity to make your own special “book” at one of our play stations, where you can choose to create a fortune teller (cootie catcher), choose your own adventure game, an exquisite corpse zine, or a collaged love letter.

⭐️What we’ll do:

—Think and talk about the value of play in storytelling

—Look at a few “narrative games,” from the Yukaghir love letters to modern day fortune tellers

—Read! Write! Play!

Colored paper, books, glue, pencils, and markers. If you have your own precious or playful
