MoCCA Festival is Manhattan's largest independent comics and cartoon art festival. This multimedia event draws over 7,000 attendees and over 400 exhibiting artists that exemplify the limitless aesthetic and social power of comics and cartooning.
During SI MoCCA Fest, exhibitors display and sell their work at Metropolitan Pavilion (125 W 18th St.) and award-winning artists conduct lectures and panel discussions at the SVA Flatiron Gallery (141 W 21st St), mere steps away.
Exhibitors are eligible to enter the MoCCA Festival Awards of Excellence, also known as the M. Prize, an award given out to recognize the most outstanding works on view at the Festival in honor of Timothy Patrick Moynihan. Artists winning this award will be acknowledged on our website and receive a financial prize as well as a pen tablet donated by Xencelabs.
About MoCCA Fest
The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) was founded in 2001 by Lawrence Klein, who opened the museum shortly after two East Coast Comic Art Museums had closed and the World Trade Center was destroyed. It was located at 594 Broadway and offered exhibits, education programs, and an annual small-press comic convention known as MoCCA Fest, first held in 2002. In 2012, MoCCA closed its doors and transferred its collection to the Society of Illustrators (SI) upon condition that a gallery be created in their museum to showcase comic/cartoon art and the MoCCA Fest would continue. Since 2013, the two-day yearly SI MoCCA Arts Fest has grown to be the largest independent comic and cartoon art festival in NYC, attracting over 8,000 attendees and over 400 exhibitors.
About the Society of Illustrators
Founded in 1901, the Society of Illustrators (SI) is the oldest nonprofit dedicated to the art of illustration in America. Our mission is to promote the art and appreciation of illustration and its history and evolving nature through exhibits and programs. We established our Museum of Illustration in 1981 and it is open to the public Wednesdays-Saturdays year-round, along with access to our Permanent Collection of 3,500 pieces. Notable SI members have been N.C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell. In 2012, we acquired the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art Collection, instituted a dedicated SI MoCCA Gallery, and began hosting the SI MoCCA Arts Fest in 2013. Through our various programs, we serve 30,000 annually.
