📚 Lecture: “Nature as Muse: Art History and the Natural World”

🎤 Speaker: Bette Sloane

Join us for a thought-provoking evening as we journey through the ever-evolving relationship between art and the natural world. This vibrant lecture traces how artists across time have painted, carved, cultivated, and even reshaped nature itself in pursuit of beauty and meaning. From early depictions of the landscape to bold interventions in the environment, we’ll uncover how creativity has long been entwined with the living world.

Discover how nature becomes material, symbol, stage, and sometimes co-conspirator in the hands of artists. Along the way, we’ll examine works that honor the natural world—and others that challenge or disrupt it—revealing a dynamic, often surprising dialogue between human imagination and the forces of nature. Spoiler: nature tends to have the final say.

Bette Sloane is an experienced high school and collegiate math educator with a background in the arts, holding a BFA in Photography and multiple advanced degrees from Columbia University. She has been recognized for her innovative teaching methods and has taken students on adventures that bridge mathematics and visual arts. When not in the classroom, Bette is likely exploring new cultures, having traveled to 51 countries across six continents.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn about art history and the natural world!
