About This Event

Washi and ink are made for each other. Explore the process of making your own ink from natural sources and create inky expressions on washi!

Throughout history the marriage of ink and washi has endured. Under the expert guidance of artist Liz Menard, make ink from locally sourced, natural ingredients to share and take home. We’ll also talk about binders, sourcing materials and more! In the afternoon, using brushes and dip pens provided by the JPP you’ll test your inks on a variety of washi, including Heritage Washi!
To document your day, Liz will guide you through making a simple, hand-stitched sample-book.Note: bring your own brushes and dip pens if you’d like

Particpants are asked to please bring:

  • an apron, or dress to get messy
  • disposable gloves
  • a notebook & pen
  • ink-dedicated, watercolour-type brushes (optional)
  • dip pens (optional)
  • other mark-making tools (twigs, feathers, etc)
  • your lunch!

Please note: If you have any sensitivity to moulds or plant materials, you must bring an N95 mask.

The ticket cost for this workshop includes $135.00 workshop fee, plus Eventbrite fees, and HST, for a total cost of $163.97

About Liz Menard:

Liz Menard is a Toronto-based printmaker, book and installation artist and arts educator. My interest is in landscape and how our perception of the landscape helps us define who we think we are as individuals and as a society. I am particularly drawn to water – especially fens, bogs, streams, rivers and lakes as well as the life these systems support. I am increasingly concerned about our water, environmental biodiversity and the native plant and animal species our water systems sustain. Like our environment, these things need to be cared for, protected, and nurtured.
