About This Event

Connect more deeply with nature by enjoying a slow and mindful guided walk, with a tea ceremony to end

Forest Bathing Session - Inveresk Gardens (National Trust Scotland)

What is Forest Bathing?

Forest bathing is a nature connection practise that originates in Japan, it is a direct translation of 'Shinrin-Yoku'. This nature connection practice is quiet, gentle and mindful. You are invited to slow down to the pace of nature, to appreciate the many small moments of beauty and wonder that often pass us by. In our busy worlds, forest bathing is permission to enjoy the present moment and connect deeply to our natural world.

What is involved in a Forest Bathing walk?

As your forest bathing guide I will bring you as part of a small group on a journey to awaken your senses and deepen your connection to the woodland. The walk will be slow and gentle, covering approximately 2 miles at most.

We will begin with a short introduction and then a guided meditation which draws attention to your senses. The walk will continue with the opportunity to learn creative ways to connect with nature and to share with others in the group. After this carefully crafted sequence of suggested activities, the walk will finish with a short tea ceremony.

About your guide

Rosie McLoughlin - After finding forest bathing through colleague Caitlin Keddie, I completed training as a Forest Bathing Guide with the Forest Therapy Hub (European Institute) in November 2021 and attended further training in May 2022. In addition to this Forest Bathing Guide training, I also work as an Applied Psychologist and have over ten years experience working in mental health settings. I find the practice has very beneficial effects on mental wellbeing and is a great opportunity to practise self-care.

Travel & Transport

The gardens are accessible by car, bus, bicycle and on foot. If travelling from Princes St. in Edinburgh you can catch the 26 or 44 bus to bring you within a short walk from the gardens. Parking beside the gardens is free.

The weather

The walk will go ahead in most weather conditions, including some patches of rain. A variety of weather conditions can offer great new ways to connect with nature. If there is a weather warning listed on the day of the walk, the walk will be cancelled and you will be sent a refund.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, this trail is not wheelchair accessible. This forest bathing walk is for adults (16+), and babes in arms are welcome, but, the trail is not suitable for buggys. Due to the slow meditative aspects of the walk, we ask you to keep dogs and other pets at home.

Please note, a £3.50 donation for the gardens is part of the ticket price, unless you are a National Trust Member. Membership will be checked on the day, thank you.

10% of ticket sales will go to a re-wilding charity (such as Trees for Life)
