About This Event

Brains and Barstools brings award-winning professors to downtown Toronto bars for lectures that spark curiosity and connection over drinks.

On Mar 24th, we present : "Fast Food Frenzy: What Happens After the First Bite?" by Prof. Roula Andreopoulos, MSc, PhD, ACUE — University of Toronto

You ate it. It tasted amazing. But do you know what happens next?

In Fast Food Frenzy, award-winning educator Prof. Roula Andreopoulos takes you on a journey through what actually happens inside your body after a fast-food meal.

From the first bite of a burger to the last sip of soda, we’ll follow carbohydrates, fats, and proteins as they sprint, slide, and occasionally crash their way through your metabolism. You’ll learn how nutrients are broken down, absorbed, and transformed into energy — or quietly stored for later (like leftovers you didn’t plan on keeping).

This interactive talk separates myth from science, explaining how your body responds to fast food in real time — no biochemistry background required. Expect audience polls, “wait… what?!” moments, and a newfound respect for your liver, pancreas, and mitochondria, which are working overtime every time you hit the drive-thru.

Real science. Big laughs. Zero guilt — just understanding.
