About This Event

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - what are the requirements for schools, and what has the Tribunal decidied in early cases?

This seminar, presented by specialist education lawyer Iain Nisbet, is an opportunity to take a detailed look at the incorporation into Scots law of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) - and the impact of this on schools and education authorities in Scotland.

The event will be of interest to professionals working in the education sector, to those from voluntary sector agencies and to parents and carers of disabled pupils. It will include:

  • an explanation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024;
  • consideration of the constitutional position of the Act, and the limitations that brings with it;
  • a detailed look at the specific UNCRC requirements which are most relevant in education;
  • an introduction to the UN Committee General Comments and how they bring detail to the UNCRC Articles;
  • case studies from the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland (Health and Education Chamber) and beyond - including exclusion from school, the use of restraint / physical intervention and the provision of British Sign Language support;
  • a Q&A (question and answer) session; and
  • a full, detailed handout for each delegate.

Location: House for an Art Lover

The Seminar will be taking place at The House for an Art Lover, a spectacular building designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and situated in the beautiful surroundings of Bellahouston Park.
