About This Event

Biodiversity Beyond Boundaries: Empowering Nature with Tech

Did you know that sperm whales use specific clicking patterns to announce their names to one another? We are on the brink of understanding non-human communication thanks to groundbreaking AI initiatives like Project CETI and the Earth Species Project. But decoding language is just one way technology is revolutionizing how we protect the planet. As biodiversity faces unprecedented challenges, our toolkit for saving it is evolving rapidly. Conservation is no longer just about boots on the ground; it is about "eyes" in the sky and "ears" in the forest.

Join us on March 31 evening for a deep dive into the intersection of technology and biology with Peter from Valinor Strategies. We will move beyond traditional tools like camera traps and acoustic monitoring to explore how LiDAR and drones are mapping forest carbon in 3D, and how computer vision can now identify individual animals from a single photo or bird song. Crucially, we will discuss how you can contribute to this data revolution. Learn how to turn your next hike into a scientific contribution using citizen science platforms like iNaturalist, eBird, Merlin, or Zooniverse.

Learning objectives:

  • Demistify the Tech: Gain a high-level understanding of how drones, LiDAR, and Machine Learning are used to track wildlife.
  • See it in Action: Discover how researchers are using AI to decode animal communication and map biodiversity in Hong Kong and beyond.
  • Get Involved: Learn how you can use free apps (like iNaturalist and Merlin) to turn your next hike into a scientific contribution.

Target audience: Absolutely no prior knowledge needed.

About Peter Haasz /Valinor Strategies
